Taking care of Cashmere/Pashmina or Yak wool scarf

Since some of our scarves are 100% hand-woven, there might be some loose threads and uneven pattern. Please be extra careful around sharp edges or sharp jewelry as it can damage the scarf.

Machine Wash

If you are washing the scarf in an automatic washing machine, always wash cashmere/ pashmina and Yak wool products at temperatures 20°C, or lower to maintain the shape and avoiding shrinkage. Always use a program for wool. For washing the scarves, we recommend you to use any baby shampoo or a special type of shampoo or detergent for wool that rinses clean and does not contain any dyes.

Hand Wash

Washing the scarf with your hands is the best way to treat cashmere or Yak wool. These wools are quite delicate, and hand washing helps prevent damage of the fiber. Mix a mild detergent or a baby shampoo with cool or lukewarm water, and let your scarf soak for about five minutes before rinsing clean.

Rinse out stains

If you want to rinse a smaller stain without washing the entire piece, most marks should disappear if you blot the spot with baby shampoo. Rinse it in cold water and lay the scarf flat to dry.

Dry It

For drying, lay the wet cashmere or Yak wool scarf on a towel on a flat surface. Do not wring it out. That can cause the fibers to stretch and it will spoil the shape of the scarf. Instead, carefully roll up the towel and scarf together, from the end closest to you. This will gently squeeze out any excess water. After that, unroll the towel and lift the scarf off, carefully bringing it back to its original shape. Lay it flat on another dry towel to let it air dry completely. Remember; never dry a washed scarf in direct sunlight or in a dryer. Irreversible changes in the fibers can occur. The scarf can shrink and lose its softness.

Ironing

Cashmere clothing does not have to be ironed and if you want to get rid of the wrinkles, you can iron the scarf by putting a soft cotton cloth on top of the scarf and gently ironing it. Direct heat can damage the fibers of Cashmere or Yak wool. We recommend not ironing for long life of Cashmere/Pashmina and Yak wool products.

Prevent and remove pills

One popular misconception about caring for and washing cashmere is that the life of a cashmere is not over once it pills. Pills can easily appear on wool, cotton, cashmere, even polyester garments, because of two fabrics rubbing together, but it can be fixed and even prevented by using a fabric conditioner to protect the fibers and reducing friction that causes pills.

Store it for the season

If you put your cashmere or Yak wool scarf away for the summer, place it in an airtight container with cedar chips. This wood will help keeping moths away and preventing it from mustiness.
